This is a behind-the-scenes look at all of the Heroes who make PAL’s Shop with a Cop possible across Massachusetts, including our state and local law enforcement partners, our donors, grantors and corporate contributors, and our community partners and volunteers.
It Starts with Community Generosity
At the heart of Shop with a Cop is community support. Through the generosity of individual donors, businesses, and foundation partners, PAL is able to provide gift cards that allow children to shop for holiday gifts, winter essentials, and sometimes something special just for themselves.
Every donation represents more than smiles, it represents belief that our mission to strengthen relationships between youth and law enforcement can make a difference.
Advance Planning
While the events take place in December, planning begins months earlier. Behind the scenes, PAL staff and law enforcement partners coordinate:
- Identifying children and families who would benefit most
- Securing retail partnerships and scheduling store times
- Coordinating officers and volunteers
- Managing gift cards, logistics, and transportation
Each detail matters, because the goal is to create an experience that is safe, respectful, and truly memorable for every child.
Officers as Mentors and Role Models
On shopping day, officers step into a volunteer role that goes far beyond their uniform. They become shopping buddies, helpers, listeners, and role models.
We’ve seen officers patiently help children budget their gift cards, celebrate thoughtful choices, and encourage kids to pick something meaningful for themselves. These one-on-one interactions are often the most powerful part of the program, building trust, connection, and positive memories.
One particularly moving moment came out of Lowell, where a young boy used his gift card to buy birthday food for his dog and gifts for his family before choosing something for himself. When PAL learned his story, we were proud to partner with the Lowell Police Department to arrange a special one-on-one shopping experience just for him, a reminder of the compassion that defines this program.
Volunteers Keep Everything Moving
From check-in tables to gift card distribution and crowd flow, volunteers are essential to the success of Shop with a Cop. Their energy, organization, and kindness help ensure that the day runs smoothly and that every family feels welcomed and supported. A big thank you to our volunteers from the Corey Griffin Foundation!
Thank You to Our Heroes
Shop with a Cop would not be possible without the dedication of our police partners, the generosity of our donors, the commitment of our volunteers, and the support of our retail partners.
You are the heroes behind the scenes, and because of you, hundreds of children experience the holidays with hope, excitement, and a sense that their community truly cares.
