Shop with a Cop is a one-day community-based holiday program that provides children from families facing financial challenges with gift cards to participate in a shared shopping experience. At its core, however, the program is about building relationships.
By shopping side by side, law enforcement and other first responders have the opportunity to talk, laugh, and get to know children in a relaxed, positive setting. These moments help break down barriers, foster trust, and allow young people to see first
responders as caring, supportive members of their community.
Here in Massachusetts, this program is referred to by 3 different names, including Target’s Heroes & Helpers, Shop with a Cop, or Presents with Police. PAL of Massachusetts has long partnered with law enforcement and first responders to implement the initiative under the general reference name Shop with a Cop. Retail partners include Target and Walmart, and program names may vary by community and partner. Regardless of the name, it’s the same special holiday program bringing children and first responders together.
During the most recent holiday season, PAL of Massachusetts supported four events under all three program names: two Target’s Heroes & Helpers events, one Shop with a Cop, and one Presents with Police. These events reach nearly 400 youth and families in communities including Lowell, Lawrence, Methuen, New Bedford, and Brockton.
The impact of the program isn’t measured only in numbers. It’s seen in growing confidence, genuine connection, shared smiles, and the unforgettable moments when children choose gifts for siblings, parents, and even beloved pets before themselves.
